Everyone swears by safety wire pliers on filter cans, but I went back to hand twisting
I know this goes against what most of the old timers on the floor will tell you. When I was working nights at a hangar outside Wichita last spring, I had a choice on a Lycoming oil filter: twist the safety wire with the pliers like everyone does, or do it by hand with a pair of duckbills. I picked by hand after watching a guy nick the filter can with the pliers and not say a word during the inspection. Six turns, tight pigtail, and I could feel every twist instead of guessing. The pliers are faster, no argument there, but I got tired of the jaw slipping and chewing up the can on tight spots. My lead said I was wasting time until he watched me finish a bank of filters in under four minutes with no marks. Now half the crew is asking to borrow my duckbills. What do you all run, pliers or hand, and has the pliers ever marked a can on you?
