Ran torque on a fuel pump flange for two years before a guy named Dale asked me one simple thing
Honestly I was doing something backwards for almost two years and did not know it. I was taught early on to torque bolts in a star pattern and just did it everywhere, no thinking. Then about six months ago I was on a King Air fuel pump in a hangar out at Addison and this older guy Dale watched me run a flange down and said "why are you walking those, it's a gasket face." That stopped me cold. He grabbed the manual and showed me the sequence was a straight run around the circle for that part, not a cross pattern, because pulling opposite corners first was squeezing the gasket uneven like a taco. I had been doing star pattern on everything since my first shop in 2019 and nobody ever flagged it. Went back through my memory and there were probably a dozen jobs where I got lucky. Now I read the torque section every single time even when I think I know it. What's the one habit you picked up early that you had to unlearn later?
