A service call at a lakeside cabin last summer got me thinking
I drove out to this old cabin by the lake to update their alarm system. They still had those big metal contact switches on the windows from like the 80s. Had to explain why we don't use those bulky things anymore and how sensors got so small. Made me remember hauling around giant toolboxes full of wire, now I just carry a tablet and a few little devices.

Man, I was so wrong about this stuff years ago. I used to roll my eyes at all the new tiny gadgets, figured if it wasn't heavy and solid it was cheap junk. Seeing those old window contacts still in place, like little metal bricks, totally flipped my view. It hit me that the old bulky gear wasn't better, it was just all we had. Now the small stuff does more and is way less of a pain to install. That cabin was like a time capsule showing how far things have come.
