Can we talk about how the 3 inch mulch rule is costing homeowners way more than anyone admits
Everyone in this trade swears by piling mulch 3 inches deep around trees, but after 11 years of removals in Columbus I think that rule is straight up wrong for most yard trees. Last spring I pulled a 40 foot maple out of a front yard in Clintonville and the root flare was buried under a solid 8 inches of mulch that had stacked up from yearly top-offs. That tree was planted in 2002 and it croaked at 22 years old with girdling roots wrapped around the trunk like a noose. I have dug out at least 30 trees since 2019 where the owner said their landscaper always did the 3 inch rule, and every single stump showed the same mess. A quarter inch to an inch is plenty for most soils here, and honestly bare mulch ring with no volcano beats a deep pile any day. Anybody else pulling trees that got buried alive by this, or am I the only one seeing it this often?
