Can we talk about the girdling root I missed on a silver maple 3 years ago in Peoria?
3 years ago I planted a silver maple in a customer's yard over in Peoria and felt good about the root flare when it went in the ground. Last week I drove past it and the trunk was already swelling above grade, so I dug down about 4 inches and found a root wrapping the base like a tourniquet. I pulled out the hand pruners and cut it back clean, but the tree had already lost that smooth flare shape. Now I check every new planting with a small trowel before the mulch goes down. Has anyone else found a hidden root that made them change how they plant?
