Found out a mature oak can pull 100 gallons of water a day, and I've been staring at my backyard tree like it owes me money
I was reading through an old extension pamphlet from Ohio State while eating lunch in my truck, and it said a big oak can move around 100 gallons of water up through the trunk on a hot day. Sat there doing the math and that's basically a full bathtub going up a tree every single day, which explains why the roots on my client's silver maple in Toledo were hunting toward the sewer line. I've been climbing for 11 seasons and never once thought about how much water was actually moving past my lanyard. Now I keep wondering if that's why the soil under some of these big canopies stays so damp compared to the yard ten feet away. Anybody else ever get humbled by a basic tree fact they somehow missed for a decade?
