I used to skip root flares on every consult, then a guy in Portland pulled back 4 inches of mulch with his hands
Honestly I thought checking the flare was overkill on healthy looking trees, but he dug down with a hand trowel and showed me girdling roots on a 20 year old maple that looked fine from the street. Now I excavate first on every job, even when the trunk looks clean. How deep are you all going before you call it good?
