TIL my brake fluid needs flushing every 2 years, not whenever it looks dark
I was killing time at a tire shop in Boise waiting on a rotation when I flipped through a maintenance chart on the wall. Brake fluid every 24 months, no matter how clear it looks. I always thought you just check the color and top it off, like oil. Turns out the stuff pulls water out of the air, and after a while that water boils when you brake hard and your pedal goes soft. My truck is at 6 years on the same fluid because nobody ever brought it up at an oil change. So here is the argument I want to settle: is a brake fluid flush at $120 every couple years just shops padding the bill, or is skipping it the reason people get that spongy pedal on a long downhill? Some guys say they have gone 15 years and never touched it. Others say the water eats the lines from the inside and the flush is cheap insurance. Where do you all land on this one?
