Diagnosed a no-crank on a Corolla with a $12 test light after a week of guessing
Had a 2011 Corolla towed in to my bay off the lot on a Friday afternoon. It cranked fine for me once, then nothing the rest of the day, and I chased my tail. I pulled the battery and had it load tested, it passed at 12.4 volts. I swapped the starter relay with a known unit, no change. I even dropped the starter and bench tested it, it spun up fine, which made no sense. I was about to start throwing parts at it when an old guy in the next bay said to stop guessing and check voltage drop on the ground strap while a helper turned the key. I grabbed my $12 test light and a jumper and found 1.8 volts disappearing at the block ground bolt. Wire brushed the bolt and the frame, cleaned the mating faces, and it fired up on the first try like nothing was ever wrong. Two hours of my week wasted on a dirty connection that a five minute test would have caught. What ground problems have snuck past you like that?
