Had to pick between a cheap timing belt kit or the full OEM set for a 2012 Civic
Went with the OEM kit even though it cost $80 more. The tensioner in the cheap kit felt like junk, and I didn't want a comeback. Anyone else find the aftermarket timing components just aren't worth the risk?

My old 2005 Corolla taught me that lesson with a $1200 bill. The cheap idler pulley from a parts store kit seized up and snapped the belt at 70,000 miles. I will never, ever cheap out on timing components again, it's just not worth the gamble. Seeing that engine torn apart on the shop floor was all the proof I needed.

My buddy's cheap tensioner failed after 5k miles.

Ever wonder if the cheap parts are just a test to see how much you really love your car? Mine's been through so many budget fixes it feels like a loyalty program. At this point I'm just waiting for the next thing to politely fall off.
