A ranger in the White Mountains told me to count my water in liters not miles and it saved my trip
Hiked the Presidential Range loop in New Hampshire two weeks ago and was planning around mileage like always, but a ranger at the AMC hut said to plan around liters per hour instead since the terrain up there is so slow. I switched to 0.5 liters per hour and ended up carrying 2 fewer pounds than my buddy who went by miles. Has anyone else ditched mileage based planning for something like time or water?
