I mapped 14 mile days for 3 trips before I figured out my real problem was the start time
For 3 trips straight I kept finishing my planned mileage completely wrecked, and I blamed the routes. I would sit at home with the map, count out 14 mile days, feel good about it, then get crushed by noon. What finally tipped me off was a guy at a trailhead near Erwin, Tennessee, who looked at my plan and asked what time I hit the trail that morning. Noon. Every single day. My whole problem was that I was sleeping until 7:30, messing around with coffee and oatmeal for over an hour, then starting at noon with a 14 mile goal in front of me. Of course every climb felt awful, I was doing all my hardest miles in the afternoon heat with a full stomach and half the day gone. I started setting an alarm for 5:30 and was walking by 6:30, and the same exact routes that used to break me suddenly felt fine. The miles did not change at all, only the clock did, and that is a way cheaper fix than buying lighter gear. So my real question is, how many people out there are blaming their route or their fitness when the actual issue is they just start too late?
