My dad told me to put the studio door on the north side and I should have listened

He said it would keep the summer sun from beating in all afternoon and heating the place up. I put it facing west anyway for the view, and now my AC runs nonstop from 2 to 6 pm in July. Anyone have tips for shading a west-facing glass door without blocking the light completely?

My last client had this same problem with a west-facing patio door. We put up a 70% shade cloth sail about two feet out from the glass... it cuts the heat way down but you still get that soft, diffused light. A retractable awning would work too if you want to be able to pull it back on cooler days.

My buddy tried that exact thing with his back door last summer. He got one of those shade sails and hung it out over his deck. The difference was crazy, like walking into a cooler room right away. He said the best part was it didn't make the room dark, just took the harsh edge off the sun. He did mention you have to really secure it though, a good wind will test those mounts.
