My drum booth sounded dead until I hung moving blankets wrong on purpose

I spent a week in my 10x12 shed studio in Portland trying to kill the slapback by covering every wall with moving blankets. It got so muffled that my snare lost all its crack. The fix was going back to just two walls and the ceiling at a slight angle, not flat. Left one side bare wood to let some reflection through and now it actually has life. Anyone else over-treat a small room and have to tear half of it down before it sounded right?

That "snare lost all its crack" line hit home. My buddy Mike did the exact same thing in his garage, covered every inch with old comforters, and his drums sounded like cardboard boxes. He ended up ripping half of them down one weekend out of frustration and suddenly it was like someone turned the room on again.
