My old boss told me to stop labeling every form field and I still can't decide if he was right
Six years back I was building a signup page for a gym in Tacoma and my boss, Dave, told me to pull the labels off every input and just use placeholder text so it looked "cleaner." We shipped it that Friday and signups fell off a cliff, something like a 22 percent drop over three weeks, because folks forgot what box they were filling in once they started typing. When I put the labels back, the numbers came right back up. Now I see the same fight happening in every app update, designers stripping labels for that minimal look and users getting lost halfway through. One side says placeholders alone are fine and labels are just clutter, the other side says a placeholder disappears the second you type so it is useless as a label. Where do you land on it, and has anyone actually kept placeholder only forms and made them work long term?
