Just realized I was skipping the intro music on every show I watched

I was binge watching The Americans on Hulu last week and kept pressing the skip intro button. Then after like 20 episodes I accidentally let it play and realized the music sets the tone for the whole show. Now I feel like I missed a bunch of the atmosphere and build up from all those cold opens I rushed through. Has anyone else done this and gone back to rewatch episodes with the intros?

My roommate actually did this with Stranger Things. He skipped the theme every time for three seasons then finally heard it and was like "wait this is actually good." He went back and rewatched the first season just to let the intros play. Said it felt like a different show.

Oh, "said it felt like a different show" - that's hilarious because he's probably right. Skipping the intro for three seasons is like eating a sandwich without the bread and then wondering why it's just a pile of wet meat. I bet he missed half the emotional setup and musical cues that make the show hit different when you actually sit through the full thing. But hey, at least he got a free second viewing out of it, which is more than most of us can say about our TV habits. Your mileage may vary, but I'm now tempted to skip every theme song for a whole season on purpose just to see if I can recreate that magic.

I read an article once saying theme songs are basically Pavlovian triggers for your brain to get ready for the good stuff.
