Guy at the hammer-in said my quench was too fast for 1084, now I'm second guessing my whole setup
I was at the hammer-in over in Goshen a couple weeks back and got to talking with this older smith while we were watching a demo, and he said something about how a lot of new folks ruin 1084 by quenching in water when they should just use warm canola. I've been dunking my blades straight into a bucket of tap water for about 8 months now and honestly thought my edges were coming out ok, but now I'm wondering if I've just been getting lucky with the steel not cracking. Anybody here run 1084 with water on purpose, or should I switch to oil and not look back?
just getting lucky with the steel not cracking" is probably exactly what happened, and I see this same thing everywhere, people get away with something a few times and figure it's the right way. Water works until the day it doesn't, and 1084 cracks fast with no warning.
