I finally learned why old anvils ring and mine just thuds
I picked up a 150 lb Peter Wright at a farm auction near Lancaster last month and noticed right away it made a dull thud instead of a ring. A guy at my local guild meeting asked me to bounce a ball bearing off the face, and it barely came back up halfway. He said a good hardened face should send it back most of the way, and mine was soft from who knows how many decades of use. Turns out the face was dressed down too far by somebody before me. Is there any real fix for a soft face besides welding on a plate, or am I stuck with a doorstop?
