TIL my coal forge firepot cracked after 8 months of me banking the fire wet every night
Found a hairline crack running down the tuyere side this morning when I went to light up, and a buddy at the ABANA meetup in Dallas told me quenching the firepot with wet ash is what did it. Any of you ever weld a cast firepot back up, or is it just time for a new one?

I used to think banking wet ash was harmless too, figured the firepot could take the heat since it survives coal all day. Then I cracked mine the same way and a old timer showed me how the water hits that hot cast iron and it just cant flex fast enough, so it snaps. Cost me a whole firepot and a weekend of down time. Now I let it cool on its own and just scoop the ash dry the next morning. Welding cast is a pain anyway, it usually cracks again right next to the weld. Might be worth trying if you know a guy with a nickle rod, but honestly I'd just start saving for a new one, lol.
