Thought tube rolling was a waste until I watched a guy in Gary, Indiana re-roll a 60 foot section
Stopped by a plant outside Gary last month and saw an old hand re-roll a warped tube section instead of cutting it out, and that 2 hour job saved them a full shutdown day. Anyone else's crew still doing this or is it a dying skill?
The part that gets me is how this skill dies with the old timers and nobody writes it down. I worked at a shop where the guy who knew how to do this retired and within a year we were cutting out sections that could've been saved. He tried to teach a couple of us but you need to feel the metal give, and that only comes from doing it over and over. Now we just call the tube supplier and wait three weeks for a new piece. The math on that is brutal when you add up the downtime and the shipping.
