Vent: watched a helper go from useless to solid in 5 weeks, and it was all one thing

I got a new helper on a tank job outside Tulsa back in March, and for the first 3 weeks I was ready to send him back to the hall. Slower than a wet week, dropped a 2 pound hammer off the scaffold, and his grinder wandered all over a bevel like he was drawing with his off hand. Then our lead fitter pulled him aside for maybe 20 minutes and showed him how to brace his wrist against the shell and let his shoulder do the travel. That was it. Inside 5 weeks the same kid was cutting cleaner bevels than a guy with 8 years on me, and his weld prep passed the first time on 14 of 16 nozzles. I still think a lot of these young guys get thrown in with zero help and we blame them for it. We spend all day on the metal and about 5 minutes on the hands working it. So what was the one thing that finally made it click for you when you were coming up, or that you've seen flip a green helper around?
