Why does nobody talk about how much a cheap slag hammer matters on vertical up
I used to think the tool didn't matter much, that a slag hammer was a slag hammer. Then about 6 months ago on a job in Gary, Indiana, I was fighting a vertical up 3/32 7018 and my slag kept rolling into the next pass. A hand on the crew handed me his old chipping hammer with the pointed end worn down to a nub. I stopped using mine the rest of that week. The weight and the worn tip let me get right into the toe of the weld without smacking the puddle, and my cleanup time dropped by half. It made me rethink all the cheap tools I've been burning through. Has anyone else noticed the shape of the tip matters way more than the brand?
