A gardener's offhand comment about my ferns hit me in a weird way

Last Saturday I was at the community garden in Tacoma, and this older lady walked by while I was fussing over my Boston fern's brown tips. She just said, "You know ferns don't care about perfect, they just want consistent." That stuck with me all week... I kept thinking about how I was watering it every few days in big gulps, then letting it dry out completely. Turns out ferns really do hate that feast or famine stuff, they want steady moisture like a slow drip. I switched to a bottom watering tray with a little reservoir and it's already looking perkier after 4 days. Has anyone else had a plant that only started thriving once you stopped trying so hard and just gave it a boring routine?
