Neighbor's overhanging branches are killing my sunflowers...

The branches from their maple tree stretch right over my fence, shading my sunflowers for most of the day. I've noticed the stems are getting weak and the flowers aren't opening fully... Has anyone had luck with a polite way to ask for trimming? I'm thinking of offering to help with the cost, but I'm not sure how to bring it up.

Ever think about just moving the sunflowers? I had a similar fight for light with a rose bush and my neighbor's clematis. I spent a whole summer trying to be polite about it, and the rose just gave up and died. Sometimes I swear the plants are just arguing through us.

Sunflowers hate being moved, they sulk for weeks.

Did my friend ever try moving her hydrangeas because of a tree? She shifted them three times but they just kept wilting, like they were mad about it. Makes you wonder if plants really do hold grudges through our garden drama.
