Why does nobody warn you that a $12 tarp saves your mortar on a hot day
I was laying block on a job in Tucson two summers back and my mortar was drying out before I could even tap the blocks into place. An older guy named Ray who I worked with for 3 days just walked over, threw a cheap blue tarp over my board, and went back to his wall without a word. Cut my waste down by half that afternoon because the mix stayed workable in 104 degree heat. Now I keep a tarp folded in my truck bed no matter what the forecast says. Anybody got other cheap tricks for beating the heat on a pour?

A tarp over the board keeps the sun off but it also traps the heat coming up, so I'm not sold on it being some magic fix. Ray may have just caught your mix at the right time of day, or your sand was wetter than you thought. Twelve bucks is cheap either way, but half the waste from one tarp sounds like a stretch.
