That $1.50 rice and beans stall near the Greyhound station in El Paso beat every meal kit I've tried
I stopped at a little stand on Alameda Ave last month and got a full plate of beans, rice, and two tortillas for a buck fifty, and it hit harder than any $12 meal kit box I've ordered. Everyone keeps pushing those subscription kits as the cheap way to eat at home, but I did the math on my last one and it came out to almost $11 a serving. The stall lady, Rosa, ladles it out of a pot that's been going since morning and it costs less than one sad kit dinner. Am I missing something about why people still pay for those boxes, or is it just the convenience?
My buddy Dave did those kits for like six months straight and swore he was saving money. Then his card got charged twice one week and he sat down and actually added it up, came out to almost $60 for five dinners that were mostly carrots and lentils. He canceled that day and now he hits the taqueria by his place, gets a fat plate for $7, and eats it on his couch. The math on those boxes only works if you never look at the math.
