Booked a 6am flight to save $40 and paid $85 to fix what it broke
Everyone in this community swears by the early bird flight, and I finally tried it last Tuesday when I booked a 6am out of Kansas City to save $40 over the 10am. What nobody mentions is that the airport shuttle in my town doesn't even start running until 5:15am, so I ended up paying $52 for a rideshare just to make it. Then I got to the gate half asleep, missed the free breakfast at my hotel, and bought a $9 sad croissant and a $5 water because I was starving. By the time I landed I was so wiped that I blew $24 on an airport lunch instead of eating the cheap groceries I had planned to buy at a market near my hostel. Toss in the extra night of hotel I needed because I couldn't check in until 3pm and the whole thing cost me way more than the $40 I saved. I get that early flights work for some routes, but for short trips under $300 total I think the math just doesn't hold up. Has anyone actually crunched the numbers on this and come out ahead, or are we all just pretending the savings are real?
