Why does nobody warn you that your volume knob is lying to you
I got a set of studio monitors in March and spent six weeks blaming the speakers for a muddy low end that would not go away. Then a guy at a music shop in Austin asked me one thing: how do you set your volume. I turned the knob on the back to the little triangle, same as always. He had me leave it at full and control the level from my interface instead, and the mud was gone in about five minutes. Turns out I had been running the amp at maybe 20 percent and pushing a hot signal into it, so the whole thing was fighting itself the entire time. Six weeks of tweaking EQ curves that were never the problem. Now I want to know who decided that tiny unmarked triangle means half power, because I have never once seen that explained anywhere. Has anyone else gone months cooking their own gear because nobody told them how the knob actually works?
