Unpopular opinion: cheap dome switches beat fancy tactile ones if you tune them right
I used to chase that perfect loud clack on every little button I touched, and honestly I blew a lot of money on switches that felt mushy after a month. Then a buddy who builds custom keyboards out in Mesa showed me a dumb trick about 6 months ago: put a tiny square of masking tape right on the center of a cheap dome switch pad. That little bit of tape changes how the dome collapses and it goes from a dull thud to a crisp little snap that I actually like better than the pricey stuff. I tried it on a handful of cheap remote buttons and a couple of old calculator keys I had in a drawer, and every single one woke up. It sounds silly but the snap is cleaner and the buttons feel less wobbly, and it cost me about 3 dollars for the tape roll. I am not saying the high end domes are junk, they are not, but for the money the tape trick got me 90 percent of the way there. Has anyone else messed with tape or shims on flat dome pads, and did it hold up after a few months of use?
