Rant: stop sanding pine with 220 before stain, you're burnishing the grain
I keep seeing guys jump straight to 220 grit on pine doors and then wonder why the stain comes out blotchy and pale. Pine is soft, so fine grit just polishes the surface and closes the pores, which means the stain sits on top instead of soaking in. Last month I redo a client's kitchen in Nashville after another shop did this, and I had to sand back to 150 to get any color at all. Anyone got a grit sequence they swear by for soft woods like pine or poplar?
