Warning: I almost turned a Pentax K1000 away because of internet lens advice, then a shop in Boise proved me wrong
A guy brought in a K1000 last month with a sticky mirror and a lens I would normally skip. I had been reading online that cheap third party glass is not worth the bench time, so I quoted him $95 and figured he would walk. He asked if I had ever taken one apart, and honestly I had not, so I pulled the mount to see the actual build. The aperture blades were clean and the focus helicoid was tight, so I cleaned the mirror stop and it worked fine for $60. Now I want to ask: how do you all decide when a lens deserves shop time versus a polite no?
