Used to rinse my brake fluid with the hose every spring, now I cringe thinking about it
For about 6 years I would pop the hood on the first warm Saturday in April, bleed the brakes into a coffee can, and then hose the whole engine bay down because it looked clean and shiny. My neighbor Carl, who raced dirt track cars out near Hagerstown, watched me do it one time and just shook his head without saying a word. After my master cylinder started weeping at 78,000 miles, he finally explained that the hose pushes water past the reservoir cap seal and into the fluid, and that is why my pedal felt spongy every July. Now I use a turkey baster to pull the old fluid out of the reservoir, top it off, and bleed at each wheel with a clear tube so I can see when the clean stuff shows up. Has anyone else been quietly wrecking a part for years without knowing it, and what finally tipped you off?
