A dispatcher in Reno told me to stop paying extra for enclosed shipping on my daily driver, and he was right
I used to always spring for the enclosed trailer when moving my car from Sacramento to Denver, thinking open carriers would beat it up. Last spring a dispatcher named Ray asked me why I was paying $1,400 more for a 12 year old Civic, and honestly I didn't have a good answer. I switched to open transport and the car showed up with nothing worse than some dust that washed right off. Now I'm wondering if enclosed is only worth it for classics or show cars, so what's your cutoff for paying the premium?

Anything under $30k or so probably isn't worth the enclosed premium, since the car's value drops way faster with normal wear than a rock chip would cost you. The real cutoff is probably when a scratch would cost more to fix than the extra $1,400, which for most daily drivers never happens.
