I finally figured out why my car hauler straps kept snapping, and it was a $9 mistake
So for about 8 months I was hauling cars from Columbus to Cleveland and back, and every single time I used the same ratchet straps over the rear tires. Then last month one snapped on I-71 near Delaware and the car rolled back about a foot before the front straps caught it. I was talking to an old guy at a truck stop and he asked if I was hooking to the frame or the axle, and I said the axle. He just laughed and said I was pulling the suspension down instead of holding the car, which puts all the stress on the strap. So now I'm wondering, do you all strap the frame or the tires, because I clearly had it backwards for most of a year.
Are you sure the axle is the problem though? Honestly I've hooked to the axle for years and never snapped a strap, and half the guys I know do the same thing without any trouble. Tbh a strap snapping near Delaware sounds more like cheap straps or old ones that sat in the sun too long, not where you hooked them. Ngl I've seen guys strap the frame and still lose a car because the body just bounced around on worn out suspension the whole ride. Maybe the old guy at the truck stop was just telling you a story that sounded good, because a $9 strap fix for 8 months of problems sounds way too easy.
