Rant: my cardboard phone stand held for 2 days then folded at breakfast
I built a cardboard phone stand on my kitchen table last Tuesday so I could watch recipes while cooking, and it tipped over and dumped my phone into a bowl of pancake batter. I beefed up the base with two extra layers of corrugated and a rolled paper tube for the spine, and now it holds steady even with my chunky case on. Should I cut the back legs shorter for a lower viewing angle, or would that just kill the stability again?
Cut the back legs down but keep the front ones the same length so the whole thing tips back a bit, that way the weight still sits on the wide base you built. I did this with a cereal box stand and dropping the back support about a half inch lower than the front kept it stable even when I poked the screen with wet hands. Too low and you lose the tilt, so try small steps and test it with your phone in the case before you cut more. The rolled tube spine is smart, that's the part that usually gives out first.
