Question about paying $180 for a resume service that just ran my old one through a template
I want to warn people about this because I see folks in here asking about resume help every week. Back in January I paid $180 to one of those online resume companies. I will not name them but the whole thing took about 20 minutes. For that money they took the resume I already had and ran it through a template, then sent it back saying it was now ATS ready. They added a skills box at the top and called it a day. I counted maybe 12 words they actually moved around. What gets me is they promise a real human writer will work on it, but the email came back at 2am with no name on it. I did land two interviews the next month, but I honestly think those came from a referral at my old company in Tucson, not the resume. If you are thinking about paying for this, ask them up front for the writer's name and a sample of their actual edits first. Has anyone here found a service that really does rewrite the thing line by line, or is it all templates now?
What worked for me was hiring a local resume writer I found through my city's subreddit who charged $90 and actually called me for 45 minutes to ask about my work. She rewrote every bullet from scratch and asked me questions about stuff I forgot I even did at my old jobs. The cheap price scared me at first but the line by line rewrite was way better than any template.
