A basement in Spokane taught me to always check for water first

I was putting down a big roll of plush in a finished basement, maybe 400 square feet, and didn't think to check the slab for moisture. Halfway through the glue down, I saw a dark patch spreading under the pad. The homeowner admitted his sump pump had failed the week before. I had to pull everything up, run fans for two days, and start over. Ever had a moisture meter save you from a bigger mess?

Honestly, that sounds like a basic step you should always do. Tbh, skipping it is just asking for trouble.

But what if the basic step is just busy work? Ngl, sometimes people add steps that don't actually help. Skipping it might save time for no real cost. Honestly, calling it "asking for trouble" assumes every step is always needed, and that's not always true. Maybe the real trouble is doing extra stuff for no good reason.
