Power stretcher seemed like a gimmick to me until Tuesday
I've been kicking carpet in tight rooms by hand for close to 15 years and always figured a power stretcher was for guys who wanted to show off or save their knees, not for real quality work. Last Tuesday I was doing a 14x18 bedroom in a rental out in Aurora and the seam kept creeping no matter how hard I bumped it with the knee kicker, and my helper finally talked me into renting one from the tool place down the street for 40 bucks a day. I ran that thing across the room with the tail block set right and the carpet snapped tight in a way I honestly have never gotten by hand, and the seam laid down dead flat the first pass. I still keep the kicker for closets and stairs, but for a full room that stretched way better than anything I've done with brute force and a whole lot less wear on my body. Now I'm wondering if I've been leaving slack in every big room I've ever done and just never noticed it because the pile hid it. For the guys who use one every day, do you still stretch to the walls first or work off the center line?
