Pro tip: making my logo black and white first saved me from a 3 week redo
Last Tuesday I sketched a bakery logo in full color and sent it over, and the owner loved it until she printed a menu and the whole thing turned into gray mush. Now I always build the shape in plain black and white first, then add color after it works. Anyone else have a trick that keeps them out of that trap?
Feel your pain on that one, that gray mush moment is the worst. I had something almost the same happen with a coffee shop logo where the whole design fell apart the second it hit a black and white receipt printer. The colors were doing all the heavy lifting and the actual shape was weak underneath, which I never would have caught if I only looked at it on my screen. Working in black and white first forces you to fix the real bones of the logo before you pretty it up. That bakery owner was probably just as bummed as you were, three weeks of redo is brutal though.
