A neighbor on my street in Dayton told me to skip the dryer for a year, and my electric bill dropped $18 a month
She caught me hauling a wet load to the laundromat after my dryer died and said just hang it in the garage, see what happens. I thought it was a hassle but I tried it for 12 months and my bill went from about $96 to $78 a month. The clothes are stiff but I got used to it. Anyone else doing this in a humid place, and how do you keep towels from smelling like a wet dog?

The "clothes are stiff but I got used to it" part is where you lose me. You saved $18 a month but now you're walking around in sandpaper towels and worrying about your stuff smelling like a wet dog, that's not really a win in my book. $216 a year is real money, sure, but you're trading a lot of daily comfort for it, and you even said you're hauling wet loads to the laundromat when things break. I hang dry some stuff in summer mostly to keep shirts from shrinking, but going cold turkey on the dryer in a humid place like Dayton sounds miserable. If towels are funky, it's usually because they dry too slow, so a fan or a dehumidifier in the garage helps, but then you're paying for that too. Just seems like a lot of hassle and scratchy clothes to chase a small drop on the bill.
