My neighborhood compost bin cut my trash bill in half after 6 weeks
I started throwing all my food scraps into a shared compost bin two blocks away in Austin, and now my garbage pickup went from $45 to $22 a month, so why aren't more cities pushing this as a real climate win and do any of you have a system that actually works when it rains?
Kept a lid on mine by drilling a few holes in the bottom of a cheap plastic bin and setting it on a couple bricks so air gets under it. Rain was ruining everything at first, soggy mess that smelled awful, so I added a layer of dry leaves and shredded cardboard on top after every dump. When it gets too wet you just toss in more browns, and when it's too dry you add scraps. Took me about a month to get the mix right but now it breaks down fast even through wet weeks. Cutting your trash bill in half is real though, mine dropped from $38 to $20 once I stopped putting food in the can.
