Ran a 40 page perfect bound job through a $200 laser and it actually held up
I used to swear you needed a commercial press for anything over a saddle stitch. Kept telling customers to go to a print shop for perfect binding, even small runs. Then last Tuesday a local teacher needed 40-page booklets for a parent night thing, 15 copies, needed them by Friday. Forking out $300 to a shop felt stupid for that count.
So I grabbed one of those basic binding machines from the office supply store, the kind with the hot glue strip. Did a test run with junk paper first. The glue got all over the roller and made a mess. Figured it was a lost cause. Then I tried the trick of letting the glue heat up for an extra 5 minutes and pressing the spine flat with a book binder clip while it cooled. Ran one copy, then another, and the pages didn't pull out even when I flipped through them hard.
Turns out my old rule was just me being lazy. The color match on those cheap pages even looked fine under the hallway lights, no banding. Didn't need a $20k machine for a 15 copy run. Now I still send big orders out, but for short runs under 50, I do them in house. Anyone else tried the hot glue route and had mixed results with thicker page counts?

That line about being lazy hit me right in the gut. I did the exact same thing for years, just assumed cheap binding meant garbage. The extra warm up time is the whole trick, most people skip that and blame the machine. I've done around 30 copies of a thicker manual and they're still sitting on a shelf, no pages falling out. Yeah, it's messy sometimes, but for short runs it beats paying a shop.

The glue strip hack is real. Five minute warmup changes everything. Short runs finally make sense in house.
