My reds kept coming out orange until I changed one thing in my RIP software
I do a lot of small batch shirts for local bands here in Portland and for about 6 months every red I printed looked orange under the shop lights. Not like a little orange, like full on pumpkin orange. I was mixing my own spot colors, checking my ink batches, even swapped out my screens thinking it was a mesh count thing. Then a guy at a supply shop in Vancouver told me to check my rendering intent setting in the RIP. Mine was set to perceptual and he said for spot colors I should be using absolute colorimetric. I switched it, reprinted the same file I'd been fighting with for weeks and the red was red. Like the actual Pantone red I picked, not some sad orange cousin of it. I still don't fully get why it made that big of a jump but I'm not touching that setting again. Has anyone else had a RIP setting mess with their spot colors like that? Curious if there are other settings I should be watching too.
Color management on the monitor side can mess with you too even if the RIP is set right. If your display profile is off, you're picking and tweaking spot colors based on a lie, so the red looks good on screen but prints wrong. Worth checking that your monitor is actually calibrated before you trust what you see.
