A pressman in Cleveland showed me to soft proof in grayscale first, and it caught my worst color shift in 15 years
Back in the 90s we would tape a Matchprint to the wall and squint at it under whatever light was handy, and it mostly worked. Last month I had a job where a warm orange kept coming back muddy brown on press, and I could not figure out why. A guy at the shop in Cleveland told me to soft proof in grayscale before touching any color settings. Turns out my K channel was carrying way too much of the orange, and I never would have caught it staring at the color view. Anyone else still do a grayscale pass first, or is that just an old habit that somehow stuck?
