I used to design everything in RGB then convert, now I build in CMYK from scratch and my reds finally stopped looking like mud
For 4 years I designed every poster and flyer in RGB because the colors on screen looked so bright and fun. Then I'd hit 'convert to CMYK' right before sending to print and wonder why my reds turned brown and my blues went flat. A guy at a print shop in Dallas finally showed me the difference on a proof: my RGB red was like a fire truck, and the CMYK version was basically dried blood. That one proof cost me $85 to redo and a whole weekend. Now I set my document to CMYK before I even pick a color, and I pick from a swatch book that matches what the press can actually do. Yes, it's less flashy on screen. But I stopped guessing and stopped wasting money on proofs that looked nothing like my monitor. Why do so many design tutorials still teach people to work in RGB and just hope the conversion works out?
