The burgundy that came out pink made me redo my whole file setup
Ngl I used to just send whatever PMS number the client told me and hope for the best. Three months ago I did a run of 500 business cards for a law firm in Denver and their burgundy came back hot pink because the file had a CMYK value but the proof was showing RGB on my old monitor. I checked the PDF and the color profile was totally missing, I never even looked at that tab before. Now I spend ten minutes on every job confirming the profile before I export, and I also calibrate my screen with a cheap puck once a month. The extra step feels boring but it killed my reprint rate, which used to be like 15 percent. Has anyone else had a client blame them for a color shift that was actually a monitor issue on the client side?

Wait, the file had a CMYK value but it still printed pink? That's the part that's messing with my head right now. I always thought if the numbers were right in CMYK you were at least in the ballpark, but no, that missing profile will completely wreck it because the printer has no idea what those numbers are supposed to mean. And then the client is staring at their own uncalibrated screen going "this looks red on my end," which is a fight you cannot win because their laptop from 2019 has never been calibrated once in its life. 15 percent reprint rate is brutal though, so ten minutes a job sounds like a straight up bargain in comparison. Honestly the monitor thing trips up so many people because everyone trusts their own eyes and nobody wants to hear that their screen is lying to them.
