Soft proofing finally clicked for me after 12 years of guessing

I spent forever trusting my monitor for client proofs, then the printed business cards came back with the logo looking like muddy clay. So I set up a proper soft proof in Photoshop using the actual paper profile from the print shop, not the generic coated one. It took about 20 minutes to match the screen brightness to my office lighting, but the next batch of 500 postcards for a Portland bakery came out nearly spot on. Has anyone else had luck with monitor calibration tools that cost less than a new screen, or do you just accept the gamble?
