That purple shirt came out brown after I trusted my monitor

Last month I printed a batch of 24 shirts for a band in Decatur, and the screen showed this perfect deep purple. I skipped the test print because I was rushing, and every single shirt came out this muddy brown color that looked like old coffee. Turns out my monitor was set to RGB at like 110% brightness, and the shop's CMYK profile was way darker than what I was seeing. Anyone else trust a calibrated screen over a physical proof and regret it, or am I the only idiot who learned this the hard way?
