Blew $400 on a tool presetter and I have never been so glad to be wrong
About 4 months ago I dropped roughly $400 on a used tool presetter for my lathe after fighting runout issues for weeks. I thought it was a dumb purchase, honestly, because I had always set tools by touching off on the part and eyeballing it like I learned in the shop back in 2016. My old lead hand told me presetters were for guys who could not feel a cut, and I laughed along with him at the time. Then I started measuring every tool offline and my scrap rate on a batch of 200 aluminum bushings went from about 12 bad parts down to zero. Setup time on a changeover also fell from around 40 minutes to 15, which matters a lot when the day shift is waiting on me. Last week I ran a job with a 0.0005 inch tolerance on the OD and hit it on the first try, something I never would have trusted myself to do before. So yeah, I changed my mind. Anyone else here run a presetter or do you still touch off by hand?
