Just realized my old boss was right about setting up jobs by hand
Been running CNCs for almost 20 years now. Back in 2004 at a shop outside Cleveland, my first foreman would make me manually compute every tool offset and check the part print twice before even thinking about hitting cycle start. Drove me nuts. He retired around 2010 and I figured I was finally free. Now with all the CAM software and tool setters doing the work, I mostly just press go and walk away. But last Tuesday I had a job with a weird tolerance on a 4 inch bore, something like plus 0.0002, and the machine was chattering. I had no clue where to start because I'd forgotten half the math I used to do in my head. Took me two hours and three scrap parts to figure out it was a worn insert, not my program. Anyone else lose those old habits after relying on automation too long, or is it just me?
